Beach Tag Information

Beach tags are required for everyone age 12 and older, from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through the Monday of Labor Day weekend, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Stone Harbor and Avalon maintain a reciprocal beach tag agreement — a tag purchased in either town is valid at both, making it easy to explore all of Seven Mile Island on a single tag.

Starting April 3, 2026, seasonal, pre-paid, and free Veteran beach tags are available for purchase:

  • The Beach Tag Office at 95th Street and the Beach — 7 days a week, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Borough Hall at 9508 Second Avenue — weekdays starting April 6, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Beach Tag Office accepts cash, check, and credit/debit (a processing fee applies to card payments). Tags can also be purchased online through Jersey Cape Tags or ordered online for in-person pickup through RecDesk. Processing and delivery fees apply to all online purchases.

2026 Stone Harbor Beach Tag Fees:

Holiday beach tags are accepted throughout the summer season and do not need to be exchanged for a seasonal tag. Veterans can receive a free specialized Veterans beach tag by appearing in person with a DD 214 or other qualifying military ID; active-duty military and their families receive free tags at the Beach Tag Office after Memorial Day weekend.

Guarded Beaches

Stone Harbor beaches are supervised by the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day. Swimming, rafts, and surfboards are permitted only at designated, guarded beaches.

S – Surfing permitted (leashes required). NR – Rafts and inflatables not permitted at this beach. Surfing is allowed only at 81st and 110th Streets. All other designated beaches allow swimming and rafting. Kayaks and catamarans are restricted to the stretch from 122nd to 126th Streets, and life jackets are required at all times on the water. Sailcraft must be licensed and beached only at designated areas.

Accessible Beaches

Stone Harbor offers handicapped access ramps from the street to the beach at 80th, 83rd, 88th, 92nd, 95th, 101st, 103rd, 105th, 111th, and 119th Streets. Access from the beach entrance all the way to the water’s edge is available at 95th and 119th Streets, and there’s pavilion access at 89th and 101st Streets.

Surf Chairs

Six beach-accessible Surf Chairs are available at no charge at the Beach Tag Office, 95th Street and the Beach. Reservations are strongly suggested — call (609) 368-6805 to reserve a chair.

Comfort Stations

A comfort station is located between 95th and 96th Streets on Second Avenue. Public restrooms are also available at 95th Street and the beach, and at 122nd Street. Portable restrooms are located at Stone Harbor Point (120 3rd Street). Please note restroom availability is subject to weather and crowd conditions.

Beach Vehicle Permits

Vehicles are permitted on the beach by permit only from October 1 through March 15. Permits are issued starting the day after Labor Day through March of the following year. For information regarding permits, call (609) 368-5102.

Stone Harbor has several other rules in place to keep the beach safe and enjoyable for everyone. Picnics, alcoholic beverages, fires, and glass bottles are prohibited on the beach, as is sleeping on the beach from sunset to sunrise. Smoking is prohibited on public beaches per New Jersey state law. Beachgoers should stick to designated beach paths and stay off the dunes — areas posted for beach-nesting birds are strictly off-limits.

Dogs must be leashed at all times. Dog walking on the beach between 80th and 122nd Streets is permitted from 7:00 p.m. to sunset, from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. From the day after Labor Day through the Thursday before Memorial Day, leashed dogs are permitted on the beach at any time. Dogs and other pets are never permitted at Stone Harbor Point, the protected conservation area south of 127th Street.
