A short history of Sea Bright

Sea Bright started as a fishing village. The Borough of Sea Bright master plan, drawing on local historian George H. Moss Jr., describes a cluster of shacks on the barrier beach in the early 1840s known as Nauvoo, a name meaning beautiful or pleasant place. In 1842 the Ocean House hotel went up opposite the mouth of the Navesink River, and the Long Branch and Seashore Railroad followed in 1865.

By the summer of 1870 the first cottages were up and the name Sea Bright was adopted. Residents formed the Jumping Point Drawbridge Company and built the first bridge to Rumson, and by the early 1880s the town had seven grand hotels. The borough was formed from part of Ocean Township on March 20, 1889.

None of those hotels remain. After the 1920s the rail line was removed, and a massive stone seawall came to cover part of the old right of way. The Garden State Parkway, finished in 1954, helped the population grow from 999 in 1950 to 1,812 by 1980. Marinas, condominiums and restaurants filled the riverfront, while cabanas and beach clubs lined the ocean.

The borough hazard mitigation plan notes that since Hurricane Sandy in 2012, homes along entire streets have been elevated. The town is nearly four miles long and, on average, less than a quarter mile wide. We still think Nauvoo, the pleasant place, fits.
