Beach Tag Information

Beach tags are mandatory for all beachgoers aged 12 and above. Proceeds from tag sales contribute to the upkeep of OCNJ beaches and boardwalk. Tags can be purchased for daily, weekly or seasonal needs and do come discounted if purchased before May 31st.

During the season, tags are available for purchase from a City representative at most beach entrances or directly on the beach. Pre-season tags can be purchased at the following locations:

  • The Ocean City Welcome Center on the Route 52 Causeway
  • City Hall at 9th Street and Asbury Avenue
  • The 46th Street Welcome Center on West Avenue
  • The Henry Knight Building at 12th Street and Haven Avenue
  • The Aquatic and Fitness Center at 17th Street and Simpson Avenue

Some locations may have limited hours during the pre-season, so be sure to call ahead for operating hours.

Guarded Beaches

Ocean City beaches are fully supervised by the esteemed OCBP from the last week in June through Labor Day. Lifeguard hours are from 10 am to 5 pm on weekdays and from 10 am to 5:30 pm on weekends and holidays. Swimming is permitted only on guarded beaches when lifeguards are on duty.

Accessible Beaches

Ocean City presently offers ADA-compliant beach-access mats at Surf Road, Waverly Beach (off East Atlantic Blvd.), Stenton Place, 14th Street, 34th Street Beach, and 58th Street Beach. Visit ocnj.us/handicapped-accessibility for the latest information. The Surf Chair program provides free beach-accessible wheelchair service from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the 46th Street Welcome Center from 9 am to 4 pm. To make a reservation (recommended) or to learn more about this program, call (609) 554-0352. Surf chairs are also available at OCBP headquarters (1st Street, 12th Street, 34th Street, and 58th Street) for temporary use to assist individuals onto the beach.

Surf Chairs

You can find beach-accessible wheelchairs at the 46th Street Information Center, located at 46th Street & West Avenue next to the 46th Street Fire House, operating from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This program is open to individuals of all ages. Known as “Surf Chairs,” these specialized wheelchairs offer everyone the chance to enjoy the beach and ocean. Rentals are available daily or for a maximum of one week. For information or reservations, please call (609) 554-0352. Additionally, surf chairs are provided at lifeguard headquarters located at 1st Street, 12th Street, 34th Street, and 58th Street for temporary use, helping individuals access the beach comfortably.

Comfort Stations

Boardwalk restrooms are conveniently located at 1st Street, 6th Street, the Music Pier (between 8th and 9th Streets), 10th Street, 11th Street, and 12th Street. Additional public restrooms can be found at City Hall, 34th Street Playground, and 58th Street Beach. Family restrooms are available at 1st, 6th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Streets. All restrooms are accessible to individuals with disabilities. Please note that restroom hours are subject to weather and crowd conditions. Additionally, a privately-owned bathhouse at 13th Street and Ocean Avenue offers shower facilities and changing rooms from mid-June to Labor Day. For more information, call (609) 399-7121.

Beach Vehicle Permits

You can obtain beach vehicle permits for Ocean City, NJ, at the Beach Tag Office located on the first floor of City Hall, 861 Asbury Avenue. These permits are required for driving on the designated sections of the beach. They allow access for fishing use as per the city’s regulations. The operation of motor vehicles on the beaches of the city shall only be permitted during the period from September 15th to May 15th.

More Ocean City Beach Regulations

Ocean City, NJ, has several other regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable beach experience. Alcohol, glass containers, and fires are not allowed on the beach. Smoking is prohibited within designated areas. Dogs are allowed on the beach from October 1st to April 30th, but they must be leashed. Beachgoers are encouraged to dispose of trash properly in designated receptacles. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season, and swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are present. These regulations help maintain the cleanliness, safety, and enjoyment of Ocean City’s beaches for all visitors.
