A short history of Deal

Deal began as quiet farmland. The Borough of Deal about page traces the area to the Monmouth Patent of 1664 and 1665 and to Thomas White of Deale in Kent, who bought 500 acres here. The first settlers lived in caves, and the old road through town, finished before 1703, is today’s Norwood Avenue, which the page calls Deal’s “Main Street.”

The page explains that the area stayed a place of farms and fishing until the late 1800s. In the early 1890s developers laid out a residential community with very little commercial space.

Monmouth County’s Historic Sites Inventory adds that Standard Oil executive Daniel O’Day bought the southern third of Deal and in 1894 hired landscape architect Nathan Barrett to lay it out, with lots on sale by 1897. State census tables show the year round population peaking at 2,401 in 1970. The borough’s chapter of the county hazard mitigation plan says Sandy significantly damaged the beachfront, where surge and waves destroyed the 1940s cinderblock wall protecting the oceanfront sewer plant. It has been replaced by a reinforced concrete seawall 36 inches thick.

The about page says the town is completely developed and that descendants of the pioneers still live in the area. We love that sense of continuity, and we think these leafy streets by the sea are made for a slow summer stroll.
