Atlantic City’s beaches are FREE to access and do not need any fee-based badge or tag to visit.

Protected Beaches

The Atlantic City Beach Patrol is the first established municipally paid professional lifeguard force in the United States. In the year 1891, the Atlantic City Council officially adopted the ordinance to create the agency now referred to nationwide as the “Beach Patrol” or “Constables of the Surf”.

Lifeguards are on duty from 10am – 6pm at various locations along Atlantic City beaches, from Caspian Ave. to Jackson Ave. July 1 – Labor Day. A limited number of beaches are protected from Memorial Day to July 1, and Labor Day to September 30. There are District Stations that provide first aid, certified EMT, and communications. District Stations are located at:

These locations are subject to change due to a variety of reasons, so make sure to check in with Atlantic City Beach Patrol for any questions.

Surfing beaches are located at Downtown Beach at Raleigh Ave, Crystal Beach at New Hampshire Ave or the Delaware Avenue Beach.

Kayakers and Windsurfers are permitted at the Jackson Avenue beach only.

Fishermen can cast off from the jetties located on Maine Avenue or the inlet off the boardwalk, or surf fishing on the beaches during non-bathing hours (outside of 10am – 6pm).

Surf Chairs

Handicap beach surf chairs are available through the Beach Patrol at District 7 – Mississippi Ave., centrally located in the city. Chair use is on a first-come/first serve basis. Call 609-347-5307 for availability.

Outdoor public showers operate seasonally Memorial Day through September 30. There are no bathhouses in Atlantic City.

Restrooms are located at several locations along the Boardwalk at: Bartram Ave, Albany Ave, Chelsea Ave, Kennedy Plaza at Mississippi Ave. Restrooms at New York Ave, Mississippi Ave and Chelsea Ave are open year-round during the following hours: May 1 to October 1: 7am – 9:30pm. October 1 to May 1: 7am – 7pm. Restrooms are ADA compliant. Caspian Ave is a single use accessible bathroom.

Atlantic City Beach ensures a safe and family-friendly environment through various regulations. Swimming is allowed only when lifeguards are on duty from 10am to 6pm. Alcohol, smoking, and pets are prohibited on the beach and boardwalk during the summer. Fireworks, bonfires, and open flames are forbidden, and visitors must use trash and recycling bins to maintain cleanliness. Walking on dunes is prohibited to protect the environment, and excessive noise is not allowed to ensure a peaceful atmosphere. Adhering to these rules helps preserve the enjoyable experience for all beachgoers.
