A short history of Monmouth Beach

Monmouth Beach’s roots reach back to 1668. A narrative by Borough Historian Rosemary O’Brien, shared by the Monmouth County Clerk archives, says Eliakim Wardell traded with the Native Americans that year for this land. In 1849 Henry Wardell deeded a lot for a lifesaving station, and in 1865 the railroad arrived and Dr. Arthur V. Conover bought the Wardell farm for $5 an acre.

Conover and friends formed the Monmouth Beach Association in 1871, and Harry Fosberg laid out the streets. The Galilee Fishing Association was chartered in 1884, and the borough received its charter on March 9, 1906. The county narrative notes that trains stopped running here in 1946.

The same narrative traces how the town changed in later decades. Shore Regional High School opened, a regional sewerage authority made new building possible, cattail fields became neighborhoods, and oceanfront mansions gave way to high rises. Condominiums, marinas and restaurants rose along the river, and federal, state and local governments joined in a beach replenishment program.

When the State planned to demolish the old Life Saving Station in 1999, the Monmouth Beach Historical Society and residents saved it, and the building was leased to the borough and renovated. We love that the town fought to keep that piece of its past.
