A short history of Longport
The Borough of Longport historical society page traces the land to Thomas Budd in 1695 and to James Long, whose friend M. Simpson McCullough bought the tract in 1882 and named it Longport in his honor. Long’s beach house was destroyed by a storm in 1914.
The page explains that Longport incorporated in 1898 and bought its first Borough Hall from the Society of Natural Sciences for $4,750. A Widener school opened in 1911, and the Betty Bacharach Home opened on Mother’s Day 1924.
The borough’s flood information page notes that all of Longport lies at or below elevation 10, between the Atlantic Ocean and Risley’s Channel, and that the whole borough flooded in the March 1962 storm and again in December 1992.
Later chapters reused the old landmarks. The historical society page says the Bacharach building became Borough Hall by 1990, and the Widener school became Gospel Hall before giving way to the 12 homes of Widener Reserve. Today the page describes Longport as mostly residential, half a square mile at the southern tip of Absecon Island. We think it is one of the loveliest places to end a beach day.
