A short history of Harvey Cedars
The Borough of Harvey Cedars history page, written by Margaret Thomas Buchholz, traces the town to a 1751 deed that called this stretch “Harvest Quarters.” Whalers once used a lookout tree here, a hotel stood here by about 1850, and Kinsey’s was welcoming guests by 1870. The Yellow Jacket train arrived in 1886, and the borough incorporated on December 11, 1894.
The history describes a living made from eelgrass and pound fishing. A causeway reached the island in 1914, electricity came in 1927, and an art colony grew up in the 1930s.
The September 14, 1944 hurricane destroyed 20 percent of the houses, and a postwar building boom followed once the Garden State Parkway was completed in 1955. Then came the March 1962 storm, three days and six high tides that cost the town some 350 homes and half of its ratables. The page calls Harvey Cedars the most heavily damaged town on the New Jersey coast. An inlet opened at 79th Street, and residents took shelter at the Bible Conference.
In the years that followed, the town preserved the meadow that is now Sunset Park, and the 1970s brought sewers and a wider Boulevard. Protection grew stronger still. The Army Corps of Engineers says it built Harvey Cedars’ engineered beach in 2010 and fully restored it after Hurricane Sandy in 2013, with periodic nourishment since. We love watching the sun go down over the bay from that same preserved ground, and we hope you will too.
