A short history of Avon by the Sea

Avon by the Sea has worn a few names. The Borough of Avon by the Sea history page says the land was officially called New Branch around 1855. In 1878 Edward Batchelor, a successful Philadelphia tobacco manufacturer summering in Ocean Grove, saw promise in the tract, then known as Key East. He cut roads through dense woods, laid a sewer system and opened the Avon Inn in 1883, and the borough was incorporated on March 23, 1900.

The borough’s adopted 2025 Housing Element explains how the summer resort became a hometown. Over time Avon evolved into a mostly year round residential community that still welcomes plenty of summer visitors. The population rose from 1,650 in 1950 to a peak of 2,337 in 1980 and was about 1,801 in recent estimates, all within roughly half a square mile. The median home was built in 1948, and more than 44 percent of houses date to 1939 or earlier.

The same plan notes two entries on the State Register of Historic Places, the New York and Long Branch Railroad Historic District and the Route 71 bascule bridge. Superstorm Sandy destroyed the boardwalk, and Representative Chris Smith’s office reported in June 2013 that FEMA had approved about $2.3 million toward the more than $3 million cost of the new three quarter mile boardwalk, which reopened that season. Today Avon remains a small, close knit borough of old houses and shady streets, and we think that is exactly its charm.
