A short history of Ventnor City

Ventnor City borrowed its name from England. The City of Ventnor history page explains that an American couple who admired Ventnor remembered it in 1889, when the Camden and Atlantic Land Company needed a name for its land south of Atlantic City. Mrs. S. Bartram Richards suggested the name on January 8, 1889, and the State of New Jersey incorporated the city on March 17, 1903, from land that had been part of Egg Harbor Township.

The city grew for most of the twentieth century. The city’s draft master plan reexamination records 8,158 residents in 1950, a peak of 12,910 in 2000 and 9,210 in 2020. Superstorm Sandy damaged 1,912 year round homes, 578 rental units and 416 businesses, and the city’s planning turned toward resilience and a more varied economy after nearby casinos closed. Beach replenishment on Absecon Island began in Ventnor in 2004, and a 2023 National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant is paying to plan the Ventnor West Eco Park.

Today Ventnor is the second most densely settled community in Atlantic County, and nearly 38 percent of its homes are seasonal. We think that mix of neighbors and summer people gives it a relaxed, lived in charm.
